I found myself excited to formally play my pieces, but nervous that I would make a major error somewhere. The slower pieces required more expression and the faster pieces required more precise control. I didn’t feel entirely comfortable with some of my pieces however because they were all of varying styles. I constantly reviewed my pieces and the required technical skills, fine tuning them where possible. I had practiced a good amount for the exam. Apparently I was talented enough that I didn’t need to take the previous exams - I was ready to skip right ahead. I had never taken a royal conservatory exam before, however my teacher convinced me to sign up for the grade 6 exam. While this seemed simple enough, there were several pieces and technical skills that were to be evaluated at the exam. After completing an exam for the Royal Conservatory of Music, students receive a certificate acknowledging their skill in playing their instrument. Eventually, my piano teacher introduced me to the royal conservatory piano exams. I didn’t find playing the piano difficult, but I found it hard to play pieces that I did not have a connection with or did not enjoy. I started with basics, but found myself moving through the work books at a quick pace.

My mother eventually realized that I was trying to play songs I had heard through the TV or radio on the piano. Little did I know what this simple banging on the keys would turn into later on in life. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I slowly found myself coming back to the piano to bang on the keys. I asked my mother why we suddenly had a piano, and she told me we were taking care of it for a family friend who didn’t have the space for it in their current living arrangement. I had never seen a piano so large before. I walked through the vestibule, removed my shoes, and couldn’t wait to go play on my game boy, when I hesitated at the foot of the stairs, staring at the marvelous object before me. I came home from school like any other ordinary day.
